Her bag should have already been packed and waiting by the front door. Instead, the bag remained empty, and everything in her closet was spread out all over the floor. She was going abroad for six months, so she needed to make sure she was only bringing the essentials. However, this was proving to be a lot more difficult than she thought.
She decided to shift her focus onto the small cosmetic bag sitting on her bed. She figured packing her beauty supplies would be a less daunting task. Looking at the sea of products scattered across her bed, she saw things from the drugstore and online shops. Some of the labels had rubbed off the containers, which made it impossible to know what was inside. Then there was a bunch of products with names she didn’t how to pronounce.
She touched, sniffed, and tested until her hands were dirty and her head hurt from all the smells. When she sat back on her bed, she saw a bottle of Jergen’s Original Scent buried underneath a pile. After the first whiff of its scent, she was brought back to her childhood. She remembered this was the lotion her mother put on every night. She remembered how its sweet almond scent always lingered in the air long after her mother kissed her goodnight, lulling her to sleep.
If she was going to be 1000 miles away from home, then she wanted something familiar close by. The Jergen’s lotion was going with her.
Not long after she packed the lotion, she saw a tube of St. Ives Apricot Scrub. Once again, she was brought back to her childhood. She remembered sneaking into her grandmother’s bathroom to use it. She squirted a tiny amount into her hand and massaged it into her skin. She felt like such a grown up that day, especially when she didn’t cry that much when she got some in her eye. She laughed at the memory as she added the scrub into her bag. She also added something else her Grandmother was never without, a lip balm from Burt’s Bees.
She added an eye makeup remover by Lancôme, Thayer’s Witch Hazel, and Herbal Essences shampoo to her bag. Every one of these products reminded her of home and the women who introduced them to her.
Suddenly the thought of traveling 1000 miles away didn’t seem so scary. No matter how far away she went, all she had to do was open up one of these bottles, and she would be back home.
